The Virginia Order of Confederate Rose is a dedicated organization committed to supporting Confederate heritage and culture. We aim to assist various Confederate groups with their historical, educational, and social endeavors. Our mission is to foster a deeper understanding of our past while promoting benevolence and community outreach. Join us in celebrating history and preserving our legacy.

Virginia is proud to have two active chapters of the Order of Confederate Rose—one serving the Portsmouth area and another serving the Roanoke/Bedford region. The Virginia Order of Confederate Rose offers a unique advantage — you don’t need Confederate lineage to join. All you need is a genuine passion for preserving and sharing the true history of the South.
Our organization is open to men, women, and youth ages 16 and older, and we welcome anyone who wants to be involved, learn, and support our mission.
WHAT WE DO
Our Mission and Activities
The Virginia Order of Confederate Rose provides vital support to Confederate organizations through educational resources, event planning, and community engagement initiatives. We volunteer in events that highlight Confederate history, and promote charitable activities. Additionally, we facilitate donations and contributions to sustain our mission and enhance our outreach efforts. Together, we strive to honor our heritage and educate future generations.
Black Rose Society
The Society of the Black Rose is a ceremonial sub‑group within the Virginia Order of Confederate Rose (VA OCR). There is no cost to participate, and—just as with the VA OCR—both men and women are welcome to take part.
Women who serve as Black Roses are asked to wear appropriate mourning attire, either full mourning or second mourning. Gentlemen mourners participate by wearing a black armband during services. Membership requires only a brief application, which is submitted to the State Keeper of the Rite. This appointed officer manages the coordination and logistics between the Black Roses and the events they support.
The Black Roses attend memorial services, dedications, and other solemn occasions in their mourning attire to honor the memory of fallen soldiers. All VA OCR members who feel called to this meaningful service are warmly invited to join the Society of the Black Rose.
